About Blackpool
Blackpool is a large seaside resort town in the county of Lancashire on the north west coast of England.
It is situated approximately 15 miles to the west of Preston, 27 miles north of Liverpool, 28 miles above Bolton, and 40 miles northwest of the major city of Manchester.
The main economy of this Lancashire seaside town is tourism. It's seafront area attracts millions of visitors and holidaymakers each year and especially to the historic attractions of the Blackpool Tower, its large Pleasure Beach, the popular Blackpool Zoo, the lovely Winter Gardens, and the Sandcastle Water Park.
Some newer attraction include Madame Tussauds museum, Blackpool Tower Dungeon, the Sealife Aquarium, and Coral Island.
Another major attraction here is the historic Blackpool Tramway with electric powered trams commuting from one end of the resort across to the other. Trams operate from Starr Gate in Blackpool to the Ferry Terminal that is in nearby Fleetwood.
The route takes in the seafront and coastal seaside promenade of Blackpool mostly before turning inland at Cleveleys and travelling onto Fleetwood.
Blackpool Piers
This seaside resort is unique in that it is home to 3 piers. These being the Central Pier, North Pier, and South Pier. Each of the piers is unique and if your planning a day trip, a weekend break, or a longer stay in Blackpool its well worth paying a visit to each one. All can be accessed easily by way of a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair.
The distance between all of the piers (from north to south pier in total is approximately) 1.6 miles.
The North Pier: This is the oldest of the Blackpool Pier trio. Dating back to 1863 it has a listed status and as with the others is well worth visiting.
As with all of the piers expect to see amusement arcades, several drink and food stalls, and the opportunity to pay a visit to one or two bars here. In our view North Pier is a lovely attraction to visit at the end of a nice day out in Blackpool, maybe for you to enjoy a glass of cold lager, or even a gin and tonic, or a glass of prosecco.
The Central Pier: As the name suggests this is the most central of the piers and is usually quite busy at all times in the main holiday season for visitors coming to Blackpool. Expect to find amusements, ice cream stalls, coffee kiosks, kiosks selling Blackpool Rock and candy floss, and lots more. It is also where the famous Big Wheel in Blackpool is situated.
There is also the family bar that is located on this pier. It is at the very end of the pier and is ideal for people of all ages that wish to relax, have a drink or two, and at certain times enjoy the entertainment that is on offer.
Throughout the main holiday season there are also usually several fairground rides operating here in addition to the already mentioned big wheel.
The South Pier: Slightly different to the other Blackpool Piers this one usually has more rides present, ideal for keeping the kids busy whilst your here. This pier also gives you a great viewpoint of the seafront of Blackpool and its a nice place to sit down at and relax for a while at any time of the day.
This particular pier was originally known as Victoria Pier. More information on this particular pier can be viewed on the comprehensive wikipedia information site. This can be viewed here.
Blackpool Illuminations
The attraction and annual period of Blackpool Illuminations are World famous. The period in which they are on is usually from around the end of August to early November of each year. The period of which the lights are on is usually for a period of sixty six days.
If your visiting the resort during this period expect to see several miles of bright and moving lights stretching down the seafront area from one end to the other, to be specific it is normally from the promenade at Star Gate and over to Bispham in the north.
In addition you will see many of the trams in Blackpool dressed up with lights too.
As far as history goes Blackpool Illuminations have been on now for over 140 years, they are also often referred to as being the greatest free light show on earth!
Blackpool Lights were first introduced in 1879, at this time they consisted of just eight arc lamps that were situated on the promenade. The first real display of Blackpool Illuminations was hosted in May 1912 to mark the first Royal Family visit to Blackpool, this was when Princess Louise opened a new section of the Promenade that was known as "Princess Parade".
If you are thinking of visiting Blackpool when the lights are on you will probably be asking what time does Blackpool Illuminations start?
The switch-on times vary during the Blackpool Illuminations period of 66 days, usually though the switch on time can be anything from around 5pm to 8pm daily.
