(Read how the UK Government wants our seaside resorts to open-up for mobility scooter users - you can read the article on this here)

What is a mobility scooter?

A mobility scooter is classed as a type of mobility aid, equivalent almost to a powered wheelchair, but in a configuration that is similar to a motor scooter or a small to medium sized quad bike.

Occasionally this type of vehicle is referred to as a battery scooter as well as an electric scooter, this is because all mobility scooters operate off a rechargeable battery pack, as can be found under the bonnet of cars and leisure vehicles such as electric golf carts and golf buggies.

How many wheels are they on a mobility scooter?

Most mobility scooters have 4 wheels, but there are also several brands and models that you can buy that have 3 or 5 wheels.

For stability 4 or 5 wheels is best, giving the rider a good level of comfort as well as safety when travelling over bumpy surfaces, uneven ground, and when climbing or descending down ramps and pathways.

A three wheeled mobility scooter can be stable in most conditions such as when being used on tarmac and concrete pavements - but overall they are not as stable as a four or five wheeled scooter.

Do mobility scooters have a steering wheel?

No, all mobility scooters that can be purchased or hired in the UK are supplied with fitted handlebars - just along the lines of what you will see on a traditional motor scooter or push bike.

This is the best option for this type of mobility aid allowing easy steering whilst also giving the operator full control of the main controls for braking and adjusting the speed of the scooter.

How is the speed adjusted and regulated?

This varies from one brand of mobility scooter to another - but usually the speed is controlled by way of a lever or button control that is similar to a brake lever on a push bike.

Some models have a speed control knob on a handlebar mounted console, a few have a twist grip type of speed control. The industry standard controls though are the twist type speed control and the lever / button controls.

Depending on the exact make and model of mobility scooter that you are going to buy or hire - the way that you vary and adjust the speed can vary, but all are easy to operate and use.

With a twist grip type scooter you twist the handlebar control to set off and speed up, and turn it the opposite way to slow down, brake, and stop.

With a lever type control this can work in several ways but usually you pull on the lever to set off and accelerate, releasing pressure on the lever when you want to slow down and stop.

Some models of electric mobility scooters use a lever on the left side of the handlebars as well, this could be a control to reverse the scooter or it could be a stand-alone brake control.

Models that have a thumb push control work similar to the details just mentioned - but their operation can vary from one make of scooter to another.

Buying Tip.... If you have arthritis or have limited use of your hands and fingers - take this into account when shopping to buy your new mobility scooter

The same applies if you are going to rent a scooter for a short period of time. Take a little time in choosing the right brand and model ensuring its the right scooter to meet your individual needs.

How do you brake and stop on a electric mobility scooter?

The exact type of braking system on a battery powered mobility scooter can vary from one make and model to another.

Most though use a braking system that is combined with the electric motor and speed controller.

This is commonly an electrical, electronic, or a combined electro-mechanical form of braking where the electric motor is utilised to quickly slow down or bring the scooter to a rest.

It is an efficient and safe system that also prevents a scooter from rolling back or forward when it is parked.

Regenerative braking - some of the top specification and high quality scooters now utilise regenerative braking. This tops-up the scooters rechargeable battery as the brakes are applied - giving the scooter a greater travelling range between recharges.

Manual brakes - some models also have traditional type manual brakes, these are in addition to the types mentioned above.

The exact configuration and specification of any manual brakes fitted can differ from one model of scooter to another, some may have just a manual parking brake, others may have additional brakes in the form of one or more disc brakes, these are usually cable operated to keep maintenance schedules to a minimum.

Parking Brake - some models are supplied from your mobility aid shop or dealer with a fitted dedicated parking brake as standard.

Most of these brakes work by way of a metal lever that pushes down onto one of the rear wheels.

Buying Tip.... If you live on a hill or need to regularly leave your electric mobility scooter on a steep path or driveway, think about buying a model that has a parking brake.

Some makes and models of scooters will have this supplied as standard, whilst it may be a dealer fitter option on others.

What powers a mobility scooter?

All mobility scooter models are driven by an electric motor, this is powered by a rechargeable battery pack that will be mounted somewhere on the scooter itself, usually on the chassis under the seat or floor area.

The battery power is measured in the unit of voltage with most scooters having a total voltage power of either 12v or 24 volt.

This is usually by way of the fitment of a single 12v battery or two 12v battery packs that are linked together.

The running time of the battery pack will be rated in amp hours (Ah) - this is the capacity size of the battery and dictates along with other things the "running" time of the scooter.

In simple terms the greater the Ah size of the battery - the longer running time it will have compared to a smaller battery size.

The rechargeable battery pack that in turn powers a scooters electric drive motor will need charging-up on a regular basis, otherwise the onboard battery pack will run flat rendering the scooter unrideable.#

When you buy or hire a mobility scooter you will be supplied with a suitable battery charger unit, this must be used inline with the manufacturers instruction guide book to give you the best running time and service life from the fitted battery.

Can you buy replacement batteries and battery chargers?

Yes, if the battery pack or battery charger has worn out or broken - you can easily buy a new one.

Depending on the physical size of the battery fitted to your electric mobility scooter you may also be able to uprate the  battery for a larger - longer running capacity one.

The same applies for the battery recharger, new replacement ones can be purchased to suit any brand and model of scooter.

Modern "fast charge" ones are available too that can speed up the recharge time of your battery pack.

Is there a best buy or recommended mobility scooter you should buy?

Whilst there are many mobility scooter and mobility aid shops in the UK that advertise a best buy or top recommended scooter - it really is down to buying a model that suits your individual needs as well as possibly your budget.

We would like to think that the cost of buying a mobility scooter should be determined solely by you buying the right model for your needs with regards to getting you mobile, but more often than not the price you pay needs to be considered too.

Sometimes the cheapest mobility scooter is the right one, sometimes it is not, what is really important is that you choose a model that will do what you need it to.

This could be a scooter for popping down to the local supermarket, for a ride to see neighbours and friends, or it could be to cover a wide range of travelling including trips to the city, town, or village centre, to the local park, the social or sports club, and much more.

If you have owned or had the use of an electric mobility scooter for quite a while you will no doubt be used to the freedom one of these mobility aids gives. Even what we take as basic day to living tasks such as zipping to the corner shop or public house can be taken away if you are suddenly without the use of your mobility scooter.

How would you travel to a friends or relatives home if your only method of transportation was taken away?

How much does mobility scooter insurance cost?

This depends on several factors including the make and model of mobility scooter you own, its value, whether it is a new or secondhand scooter, and also where the scooter is to be stored or parked when not in use.

You can reduce the insurance cover premium by taking several steps to reduce the risk of theft. These include parking your electric mobility scooter off-road and out of site, perhaps in a shed or garage? by way of fitting a security alarm or padlock and chain? a simple way to reduce your insurance cost is by accepting a larger amount of insurance excess.

Looking For The Cheapest Price On Mobility Scooter Insurance?

You can save money generally by choosing to insure your mobitity scooter by way of using an on-line (on the internet) company.

Insurance premiums are generally lower in price due to the insurance company being able to cut their admin costs to the minimum and by way of producing insurance quotes via email direct to you.

Mobility Scooter - Replacement Battery

Does the battery pack on your mobility scooter need replacing?

Are you searching on-line to find mobility scooter batteries? If so you have come to the right place!

We provide details and information on where you can buy a new replacement battery pack to fit your electric mobility scooter - and at amongst the cheapest prices you will find in the UK.
-------------------
All makes and models of electric mobility scooters will at some time require a new battery fitting. With ageing and chemical deterioration (that has to take place with a battery) you can find that the performance of your mobility scooter will fall as the time to replace the battery approaches.

Typical symptoms are reduced running time and distance, the battery taking a longer time to top-up its charge, and very low speed of the scooter in general. When a battery pack fails totally the scooter will usually either not accept a charge at all or the scooter will break down - usually when you most need it on that trip to the shops, a friends house, or on the journey back home.

If you are the owner of an electric mobility scooter one of the best ways to avoid a "breakdown" is by way of preventive maintenance and the fitment of a new battery pack every year of useage or so. This way the battery on your scooter will always be in a good condition and delivering the performance that is essential to the mobility scooters drive motor.

Mobility Scooter Covers

Rain Covers for Mobility Scooters: The Complete Guide to Staying Dry and Safe

If you own an electric mobility scooter and need to buy a protective cover you have several choices available.

There are a wide range of covers available to suit most makes and models so whether you own a Pride Colt, a Pride Go Go, a Days Strider, a Quingo mobility scooter, or any other make and model, you are sure to find a protective cover to suit.

When it comes to choosing which cover to buy for your mobility scooter you need to decide whether you want a substitute "garage" type cover to park and store your scooter in, or whether you just want a protective cover to keep it dry and undercover from the weather elements.

Protective mobility scooter covers can be bought at cheap prices ranging from around the £10.00 to £20.00 price band. At the other end of the scale a really good plastic / pvc scooter cover can be a good investment, especially if your mobility scooter lives outside all-year round.

For UK owners of mobility scooters water is the top item the scooter will need protection from. After purchasing an electric mobility scooter the last thing you will want is deterioration and soiling of it because of the lack of weather protection that a scooter cover can provide.

Mobility scooters offer independence, convenience, and freedom to many individuals across the UK and beyond. But as any scooter user knows, the weather doesn’t always cooperate. One minute you’re cruising along in the sunshine, and the next, you’re caught in a downpour. That’s where rain covers come in — a simple yet essential accessory for protecting both you and your scooter from the elements.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about rain covers for mobility scooters: what they are, the different types available, key features to look for, and tips on choosing the best one for your lifestyle.

What Are Rain Covers for Mobility Scooters?

Rain covers are waterproof or water-resistant protective accessories designed to shield mobility scooters and their users from wet weather.

They act as a barrier against rain, wind, and in some cases, snow, helping to prolong the life of the scooter and keep riders dry and comfortable.

Rain covers can be simple tarpaulin-like sheets, or they can be fully enclosed, tent-style canopies. Some are designed for temporary use, while others are suitable for permanent or semi-permanent installation.

Why You Need a Rain Cover

Rain covers offer more than just protection from precipitation. Here are some compelling reasons to invest in one:

  • User Comfort: Stay dry and warm during rainy weather.

  • Scooter Protection: Prevents water from seeping into electrical components, which can lead to malfunction or damage.

  • Visibility: Clear panels in many covers improve visibility while keeping out rain.

  • Extended Longevity: Helps prevent rust, corrosion, and wear and tear on key scooter parts.

  • Versatility: Many covers also offer wind and UV protection, making them useful in all weather conditions.

Types of Mobility Scooter Rain Covers

There are several different types of rain covers to suit different needs, budgets, and scooter models. Here’s a breakdown of the most common ones:

1. Full Scooter Covers

These are draped entirely over the scooter when it’s not in use. They’re great for storage, offering full waterproof protection against the elements.

Best for: Overnight storage, travel, or long-term protection.

Pros:

  • Covers entire scooter

  • Easy to put on and take off

  • Usually foldable and portable

Cons:

  • Not for use while driving

  • Doesn’t protect the user

2. User-Only Rain Ponchos or Capes

These are wearable covers designed specifically for the rider, often shaped to drape over the legs, arms, and torso while seated on the scooter.

Best for: Quick trips, light rain, and short-term use.

Pros:

  • Easy to store and carry

  • Affordable

  • Covers user without restricting mobility

Cons:

  • Leaves scooter exposed

  • May not cover feet or controls fully

3. Canopy-Style Covers

These attach directly to the mobility scooter and create a fully enclosed space using waterproof materials and transparent windows.

Best for: All-weather use, regular travel, and longer journeys.

Pros:

  • Full protection for both user and scooter

  • Windows allow clear visibility

  • Semi-permanent, secure installation

Cons:

  • Higher cost

  • Requires installation

  • Adds bulk and weight

4. Folding or Collapsible Canopies

A more flexible version of the fixed canopy, these rain covers can be folded away when not in use. Often used with frame supports or tension poles.

Best for: Daily users who want versatility.

Pros:

  • Can be tucked away during dry weather

  • Doesn’t require removal for storage

  • Medium protection level

Cons:

  • May not be as durable as fixed canopies

  • Can be fiddly to operate for those with limited hand function

5. Control Panel Covers

These small waterproof covers are used to protect the electronic controls or tiller from moisture.

Best for: Extra protection during wet conditions.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive

  • Easy to use

  • Useful as an add-on

Cons:

  • Doesn’t protect user or other scooter parts

Key Features to Look For

When choosing a rain cover, it’s important to consider your needs and look for features that enhance protection, comfort, and usability.

1. Material Quality

Look for heavy-duty, waterproof materials such as PVC, nylon, or polyurethane-coated fabric. Breathable options are also available to prevent condensation buildup.

2. Clear Windows or Panels

If the cover goes over your head or scooter’s lights, it should have clear, UV-resistant panels to maintain visibility for safety.

3. Ventilation

Canopy-style covers should include ventilation flaps or mesh sections to avoid fogging and overheating.

4. Ease of Use

Covers should be simple to put on and take off, even for those with limited dexterity. Zippers, Velcro fasteners, or pull ties help secure the cover.

5. Size and Compatibility

Not all covers fit all scooters. Measure your scooter carefully and check product specifications before purchasing.

6. Portability

If you’re frequently on the go, look for a cover that folds into a compact size or comes with a carry bag.

7. UV Protection

For those who ride in sunny or changeable conditions, look for materials with UV resistance to prevent fading and sun damage.

Benefits of Using a Rain Cover

Beyond just staying dry, rain covers can greatly improve your scooter experience:

1. Peace of Mind

You can travel without worrying about sudden weather changes. This makes planning errands or leisure trips far less stressful.

2. Independence

Rain covers allow scooter users to go out in all conditions. No need to rely on help or wait for better weather.

3. Health Protection

Staying dry helps prevent chills, hypothermia, or getting caught in prolonged dampness — all of which can lead to illness.

4. Cost Savings

Water damage to scooter controls, motors, or batteries can be expensive to repair. A good rain cover can prevent these issues entirely.

5. Confidence Boost

Knowing you’re protected allows you to focus on your journey rather than the forecast.

Choosing the Right Rain Cover for You

Here are some questions to ask yourself before buying:

  • How often do you use your scooter?
Daily users might benefit from a semi-permanent canopy, while occasional users might just need a poncho or control cover.

  • Do you ride in all weather?
If yes, a fully enclosed canopy is your best bet.

  • Do you store your scooter outdoors?
Then a heavy-duty full scooter cover is essential.

  • Do you have physical limitations?
Opt for a design that is easy to handle and requires minimal effort to attach.

  • What’s your budget?
Ponchos can start at under £20, while full canopies can exceed £300.

Maintenance and Storage Tips

To get the most from your rain cover:

  • Clean regularly with mild soap and warm water to prevent mould or mildew.

  • Air-dry before folding and storing.

  • Check for damage such as rips, tears, or worn Velcro.

  • Replace when needed — even the best covers degrade over time.

  • Store in a dry place, ideally in a bag or under shelter.

Top Brands and Where to Buy

Popular brands offering quality mobility scooter rain covers include:

  • Able2

  • Drive Medical

  • Mobility Smart

  • Kymco

  • TGA Mobility

You can find a wide selection from mobility retailers, both online and in-store. Websites like Complete Care Shop, Millercare, Amazon UK, and Argos offer fast delivery and customer reviews to help you decide.

DIY or Custom Options

If you have a unique scooter or specific needs, consider:

  • Custom-made covers from mobility suppliers

  • DIY modifications, such as adding reflective strips or extra windows

  • Local tailors or canvas makers, who can craft bespoke designs

Real User Experiences:

“I Never Leave Without It”

Susan from Liverpool says: “My folding rain cape lives in my basket. If there’s even a chance of rain, I slip it on in seconds. It keeps me dry and has saved my seat from getting soaked more times than I can count.”

“Game-Changer for My Independence”

Graham, a former taxi driver from Essex, shared: “The canopy rain cover I installed changed everything. I no longer have to wait for dry days to do my shopping or visit mates.”

“Affordable Peace of Mind”

Linda, 72, from Kent: “I bought a scooter control cover for £10 and it’s the best tenner I’ve ever spent. My tiller stayed dry even during Storm Babet!”

Conclusion: Don’t Let the Rain Stop You

Rain shouldn’t be a barrier to your mobility, and with the right rain cover, it won’t be. Whether you’re a casual user or rely on your scooter every day, there’s a rain cover to suit your lifestyle and needs.

From simple ponchos to high-end weatherproof canopies, staying dry on a mobility scooter is easier than ever. Invest in the right solution and take back control, rain or shine.
